Le Clezio is in the very centre of Brittany. The medieval town of Pontivy is only 5 miles away by road, about 10 minutes drive in the car, or you can ride alongside the river and spend an hour getting there by bicycle. In Pontivy you can visit the Chateau de Rohan, explore the medieval town centre, and enjoy some traditional retail therapy at the Monday market. Stroll along the river and pop in to one of the many restaurants for lunch or dinner. The food is exceptionally good and really great value. Many local restaurants offer a “working man’s lunch” – basically a set menu of 3 or 4 courses, including drinks and coffee, for about 11 euros – on current exchange rates that’s less than £9.00 per head. The quality is excellent and they are great value.
Pontivy offers all the facilities you would expect of a modern town, and really is the heart of the region. Everything is within easy reach; the north and south coasts are both about 45 minutes drive away, the west coast about an hour and a half. Well worth a visit are the standing stones at Carnac, the towns of Dinan, Lorient, Brest, Josselin, Quimper and Vannes, and a little further east, Rennes, the regional capital, is certainly worthy of a day out.
Closer to home, the Lac du Geurledan is around 3 miles away, where you can swim, go boating, cycling or walking around its shores, without interruption, even in peak season. Pedalos, canoes and motor boats can be hired and there is the option of a boat trip around the lake on the small pleasure cruiser.
There are several restaurants at the Lac, and we can recommend those at Beau Rivage and Le Merlin, where the food is tasty, great value, and the friendly staff speak excellent English. Just along the road is Mur de Bretagne, with a supermarket, post office, bank, bars and more superb restaurants. On Sundays, the traditional open air market at the Abbey de Bon Repos is great fun, with a wide range of stalls offering local produce, and arts and crafts. You can eat al fresco and listen to local musicians (of varying skill!). Horse riding, tennis courts and golf are nearby too.
Dogs are welcome at Le Clézio. There are excellent vet surgeries in Pontivy. If you would like to bring your dog(s) on holiday we will be very happy to assist you with appointments to meet the requirements for returning to the UK.
